March 5  Educators' Institute Bias in Motion: Breaking the Cycle of Bullying.Supported by a grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation and held in cooperation with the Fairleigh Dickinson University Peter Sammartino School of Education, this program is designed for teachers and administrators and anti-bullying specialists, coordinators and counselors; participants can earn 6 CEUs.  Fairleigh Dickinson University - Madison Campus.  Registration fee: $65; registration deadline Feb. 24.  Click here to register.

Upcoming Holidays & Days of Significance

Jan. 23 CHINESE and VIETNAMESE (Tet) NEW YEAR - A festive holiday celebrated for about two weeks; 2012 is the Year of the Dragon.

Jan. 27 INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY - designated in 2005 by the UN General Assembly on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps. On this annual day of commemoration every member state of the UN has an obligation to honor the victims of the Nazi era and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides. This year’s theme is Children and the Holocaust.

Feb. 4 MAWLID AL NABI - celebration of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, founder of Islam. The day is fixed at the 12th day of the month of Rabi al-Awwal in the Muslim calendar. Muhammad was born about A. D. 570 and died in A. D. 632.  (Muslim)

Feb. 5 FOUR CHAPLAINS' SUNDAY - Commemoration of the event in World War II when four Chaplains of Jewish and Christian traditions (Catholic and Protestant) gave their life jackets to others as a troop ship sank in the Atlantic Ocean.

Feb. 15 NIRVANA DAY - In the Northern tradition, this is the anniversary of Buddha's passing away.  In the South tradition, the Buddha's death is commemorated during Visakha (June 3, 2012) (Buddhist)

Feb. 19-25 BROTHERHOOD SISTERHOOD WEEK - Schools, churches, synagogues, civic groups, and other organizations across America celebrate by bringing together people of different faiths and backgrounds.

Feb. 20 PRESIDENTS' DAY - Originally dedicated to honor President George Washington’s birthday, it is now generally accepted as honoring all the American presidents, but most significantly George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Feb. 22 ASH WEDNESDAY/LENT BEGINS - Begins Christian Lent, the period of preparation for Easter; usually 40 days. (Protestant, Roman Catholic)

Feb. 26 March 1 AYYAM-I-HA -Period to adjust the Baha'i year to the solar calendar; each day of Ayyam-I-Ha is marketd by a different virtue such as hospitality, gift-giving or charity.

Feb. 27 LENT BEGINS - Period of prepartion for Easter. (Christian Orthodox)

Exciting College Student Internship Opportunities at the American Conference on Diversity

This internship will provide college students with hands-on learning experience in designing, implementing and evaluating diversity and inclusion programs for youth and adults throughout the state of New Jersey.
