Statewide Conferences
Each year the American Conference on Diversity educates leaders on issues of diversity and inclusion through conferences and summits. Statewide programs such as the Business Leaders Series, including the Health Disparities Scorecard funded by Harrah's Entertainment and the Business Leaders Roundtable funded by Pfizer, dealing with Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities in the workplace, provided through funding from Pfizer; and the Annual Diversity Issues in Higher Education Conference offer the opportunity for dialogue and conversations on many key topical issues in New Jersey.

Healtcare Cultural Competency - Improving the Quality and Safety of Care for Diverse Patient Populations, Oct. 17, 2008
New Jersey’s diversity if reflected in the diversity of languages spoken by the state’s residents: more than 26% speaks a language other than English; more than 130 languages are spoken here; and 12 New Jersey counties were among the top 100 US counties with the greatest percentage of the population speaking a language other than English. This diversity is also reflected in the patient population cared for by our state’s healthcare systems. The multiplicity of languages, cultures, faith beliefs and healthcare practices can be overwhelming to healthcare professionals and the settings in which they practice.
The Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 15,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States, has several standards relevant to the provision of care that is mindful of the “cultural, language, literacy and learning needs of individuals.” (The Joint Commission, April 2008) This one-day conference explores what our hospitals and healthcare delivery systems can do to improve the quality and safety of care for diverse patient populations. The $10 registration fee includes lunch and materials. The program is supported by a grant from The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey.

New Jersey: A Statewide View of Diversity
As the most diverse state in the country, New Jersey faces unique opportunities and challenges to create inclusive communities, a productive workforce, a responsive educational system, bias-free institutions and a respectful society. To measure New Jersey residents' attitudes and behaviors relative to diversity issues in our highly diverse state, the Presenting Partners have commissioned the Bloustein Center for Survey Research to implement a statewide telephone survey of New Jersey residents. The survey results and the opportunity for discussion, evaluation and recommendations for future steps were presented September 20, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency New Brunswick.
