Healthcare Cultural Competency Training

The Institute of Medicine (IOM), in its landmark 2002 report, Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Healthcare, found "A large body of published research reveals that racial and ethnic minorities experience a lower quality of health service and are less likely to receive even routine medical procedures than are White Americans." They further found that this disparity in care exists "even when access-related factors, such as patients' insurance status and income are controlled."

As a result of their findings, one of IOM's key recommendations is to provide cross-cultural education in the health professions. The goal of the American Conference on Diversity Healthcare Cultural Competency Program is to provide healthcare professionals with tools and information critical to developing the human relations skills necessary to reduce bias and prejudice and to providing culturally respectful and competent healthcare. This program is appropriate for any individuals having interaction with healthcare clients and can be provided as an on-site program.
